A short Film of the Mud Pots and geothermal mud volcanoes of the Salton Sea (Southern California). Like walking on another planet, the earth is alive right under your feet, each pot has a different sound, the escaping (smelly) gasses hissing through vents all around, add the (often) extreme heat of the Imperial Valley , the largest body of water in Southern California (the Salton Sea) only a short distance away, thousands of beautiful migratory birds, make for one of the most surreal experiences ever.

CD Review - Fret Magazine (Netherlands)

Truus, known as the front woman of the band Nasmak in the 80’s, was inspired by the lost paradise and natural wonder of Salton Sea.  She create this CD filled with mysterious soundscapes.  The compositions were created mostly by the sounds of unpredictable instruments, such as the Crackle Synthesizer.  In addition to that she used various percussion instruments made from found objects at the Salton Sea by collaborator and artist Bosko Hrnjak.  The most surprising element is her forceful vocals, exciting, vivacious and merciless.

Although we’ve been doing “regular” updates for our mailing list we have been busy and not posting on our news page, (if you’d like to be added click here and note "add me to Salton mailing list" in the subject line).

If you’ve been here before, you probably noticed the website has been completely revamped, updated and looks great.

To all of you who are on Facebook, please join our Salton Sea group.

Next our CD with the work we did at STEIM is out (for sale here), mixing and mastering took longer than anticipated along with a couple of unforeseen technical problems. We are extremely happy with how it all turned out. It is perfect for my photos, but is also an amazing soundtrack for the Salton Sea. I listened to it while driving through the area recently and it felt like a religious experience. Have a listen or get some free downloads in the track box below.

Salton Sink Vol 1 - Salton Sea by Truus

Another exciting piece of news is the development of brand new experimental synthesizer type instruments for Truus to play, the “Mavtek V” (seen here).

Collaborating with the gifted electronic talent, Dr. Moonstien, we are currently refining our applications on a second instrument, more on that as it develops.   These instruments have some of the same principles as the Crackle Synthesizer, but with some added features that make them very unique and a perfect fit for both our projects and Truus’ predilection for experimental instruments.

November 10

Another infrequent post for our "BLOG" sorry this has taken so long, we are exhausted, I think our jet lag never left due to our being inside a studio for 10 days straight. Yes we did have a performance at STEIM last Wednesday thanks to everyone who attended, see some excerpts here:

We just finished our residency at STEIM thanks to everyone there for their help and hospitality. Now all we have to do is get back to the Ranch, mix, edit all the various takes we did and put it on a CD or whatever we're going to do with it, hopefully we'll have something soon-ish for everyone to listen to. Here is a short piece of Truus on the Crackle Synth, backed with the Putney Synth:

Below are a couple of photos of Truus, one just before the show the other with her behind a huge metal piece of 1970's art that I can't recall the name for, we ended up "playing" it in a couple of pieces and of course the last charming shot of Amsterdam from the end of our street.

Thanks for looking

Oct 26 - 2010

We are working at STEIM in Amsterdam at this moment creating sounds for the Salton Sea Project. STEIM has provided us with a wonderful large studio and a number of great vinage synthesizers. The Crackle Synthesizer is the most exciting instrument we could possibly hope to have as an addition to this. Its unpredictable nature always surprises in an almost organic way. In a few weeks we hope to have a couple of sound clips up on this website. On November 4th at 8:30 (eve) we will have a short Live presentation at STEIM if anyone is around in Amsterdam please drop by. It has an element of nostalgia for Truus since she worked extensivly with the Crackle 30 years ago while in several bands both here and the US. Since Michel Waisvisz passed suddenly away she wanted to do something as an homage, a memory or just an expression of joy of having known and colaborated with the Crackle master himself. It is uncanny how perfectly it fits into our Salton Sea concept.
